Commercial Cyclotrons. Part 1. Commercial Cyclotrons of the Energy Range of 10 to 30 MeV for Isotope Production

Papash A.I., Alenitsky Yu.G.

Review of commercial medical cyclotrons for isotope production is proposed. For more than 25 years compact isochronous cyclotrons to accelerate negative hydrogen ions from 10 to 30 MeV energy range are widely used for production of medical isotopes and other applications. There is a variety of cyclotrons of the energy range of 10 to 12 MeV with moderate beam current to produce PET isotopes like 11C, 13N, 15O, 18F. Also high intensity commercial cyclotrons are available on the market to provide most of isotopes used in medicine and industry. The physical and technical parameters of accelerators are compared. Measures to improve performance and increase beam intensity over 2-3 mA are discussed.
